The National Institutes of Health is sponsoring a 2-day conference on Gastrointestinal Microbiota and Advances in Prebiotic and Probiotic Research to facilitate interactions/collaborations among research scientists, identify gaps and future research opportunities, support the study of probiotics, and access future research opportunities with regard to role of probiotics in health and disease.

Conference Goals:
This conference will:  (1) Summarize the state of the science characterizing gastrointestinal microbiotia and their function; (2) Review the evidence to support the influence of probiotics/prebiotics on normal gut ecology and describe the changes of gut ecology in disease; and (3) Define microbial populations in different age groups (e.g., from infancy to adulthood and immunosuppressed versus healthy adults).
